🚨 Woman Charged After Brampton Murder and Amber Alert Case
A 36-year-old woman has been charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder after she was found in a vehicle with Anthony Deschepper — the suspect accused of fatally shooting Savannah Kulla, 29, and abducting their one-year-old daughter, which triggered a province-wide Amber Alert on Tuesday.
According to Peel Regional Police, the woman, who has ties to both Brampton and Niagara Falls, was located in a vehicle with Deschepper at a gas station in Niagara Falls early Wednesday morning. She was arrested at the scene, where Deschepper was shot and killed by police during an encounter with the Niagara Regional Police Service’s Emergency Task Unit.
The incident is now being investigated by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU). No officers were injured during the confrontation, which occurred around 2:30 a.m..
📍 Connection to Brampton Homicide and Amber Alert
Deschepper, 38, was wanted in connection with a fatal shooting in Brampton on Tuesday afternoon. Around 2 p.m., police responded to reports of gunfire in a plaza parking lot near Queen Street East and Airport Road. The victim, identified as Savannah Kulla, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the shooting, police issued an Amber Alert for one-year-old Skyla-Rose Deschepper, who was allegedly taken by her father, Anthony Deschepper, in a black 2024 Nissan Kicks. The child was found safe later that evening after being dropped off at a relative’s home.
⚖️ Suspect’s Background and Criminal History
Deschepper had been awaiting trial on firearm charges stemming from a September 30, 2023 incident involving the same woman he is accused of killing this week. His lawyer, Andrew Edgar, confirmed to CBC Toronto that Deschepper “always denied the allegations and planned to contest them in court.”
Those earlier charges included:
- Possession of a loaded or restricted firearm
- Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm
- Unauthorized possession of a firearm
- Discharging a firearm in a reckless manner
- Two counts of possession of a firearm contrary to an order
Peel Regional Police confirmed that Deschepper was found in a Chevrolet with the woman charged in this case, just hours before the fatal police shooting in Niagara Falls.
đź’” Advocates Say More Must Be Done to Prevent Femicide
The death of Savannah Kulla — a mother of four — has renewed calls for stronger measures to protect victims of intimate partner violence and to address what advocates call an epidemic of femicide across Canada.
Rebecca Pacheco, of Embrave Agency to End Violence, said the case highlights the cracks in support systems for women in danger.
“It’s a tragedy every time. We mourn for Savannah and send our condolences to her family and friends,” she said. “When survivors come to our doors and shelters are full, it shows a systemic failure.”
Nneka MacGregor, of the Women’s Centre for Social Justice, said that femicide is preventable.
“There are known risk factors — separation, access to firearms, prior police involvement — and when those factors are ignored, women are left unprotected,” she said. “The fact that this man wasn’t tracked, and Savannah wasn’t protected, is both tragic and infuriating.”
