Day 10 In The Search For Kaden Young – Fundraiser Being Held This Weekend

Volunteers will gather in Kitchener Friday to search for any sign of Kaden Young, the 3-year-old boy swept down the Grand River during flooding last month.

Those wanting to help in the all-day search are encouraged to meet at 326 Riverbend Drive in Kitchener just before 9 a.m. to go over where the search parties will go to search along the river.

Kaden hasn’t been seen since the early morning hours of Feb. 21. He was in a van with his mom, Michelle Hanson, at 1 a.m. that morning. They were driving a rural road near Grand Valley, west of Orangeville, and were near the family’s home when Hanson drove around a road closure sign set up because of water over the road. The van went into the Grand River.

When Hanson tried to free Kaden from the van and get him to the riverbank, the fast-moving water swept him out of her arms.

The search in Kitchener Friday is more than 40 km downstream from where the accident took place.

Daily search continues in Grand Valley

Meanwhile, the daily search continues in Grand Valley with volunteers helping with organized line searches along the riverbank.

This weekend, organizers are hoping more people will come out to continue chipping through ice that remain on the riverbank.

“Don’t expect a walk in the park. There is a lot of work to be done, a lot of ground to be tossed,” line search organizer Richard Croft told CBC News Thursday morning.

He encouraged anyone who wants to volunteer to bring tools with them if they own them, including rakes, shovels or pickaxes.

On Sunday, Hanson wrote on the Facebook group that she and Kaden’s father, Cam Young, want to provide Easter dinner for the volunteers.

“We are missing our baby for Easter dinner, Easter eggs and all that go with this family weekend,” she wrote.

“Easter weekend is upon us and searchers have become a part of our family. Cam and I don’t know how to express how grateful we are for all of you, and how much we appreciate the help from everyone to help bring our Kaden home.”
