Provincial police hope to learn more next week about the human bones discovered in a wooded area off Highway 26 between Collingwood and Wasaga Beach on Wednesday.

Huronia West OPP Const. Lindsay Griffin said there will be a post-mortem examination of the remains early next week.

Until then, the investigation continues, but police are no longer at the site where the bones were discovered.

An area off the highway over the Wasaga Beach boundary was blocked by police as investigation and search teams scoured the area.

Police said the terrain made the work more difficult with heavy vegetation and mud.

The remains were first discovered by land surveyors who were in the area and called police at about 3:30 p.m., May 24, to report what they had come across.

Griffin said police called in a cadaver detection dog and a forensic anthropologist as well as the OPP crime unit and coroner to assist on scene.

The remains were located about 200 metres from the highway.

Griffin said she couldn’t comment on the identity of the person whose remains have been found, nor for how long they have been decaying, but confirmed, “it’s bones.”
