OPP warn about two alleged attempts to abduct children in Russell, Ontario







In the first attempt, on Tuesday at 5 p.m., a man went to a local day care and attempted to pick up a child when he did not have the authority to retrieve the youngster. According to police, the man referred to the child by their first name, but could not provide their last name. Day care staff phoned the child’s parents who confirmed that no one else was authorized to retrieve the child from the facility.

Police describe the suspect as a white male who stands around 5’9″ (180 centimeters). He is believed to be between 35 and 40 years of age and is English-speaking. The man has several tattoos and is well built. He had a goatee and long sideburns and was wearing a plaid T-shirt.

The second incident reported to police occurred on Wednesday at around 2:30 p.m. An unknown person driving an older black car slowed down and followed a child who was on their  bike on Concession Street and Craig Street in Russell. The windows and windshield were tinted so assistance is being sought from the public in helping to identify the vehicle. Police describe the vehicle as and older black compact car with tinted windows and a tinted windshield. It had dark rims and several rust spots.

Police said that it is unknown if the two incidents are connected. They ask anyone who can assist in identifying the man or the vehicle to call Detective Constable Michael Cunning at 613-443-4499 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
