The OPP Crime Unit among other police agencies has been called in to investigate the discovery of human remains near Cobalt.

On Monday, April 15,  shortly before 2 p.m., Temiskaming OPP were notified of found human remains in Coleman Township, southeast of Cobalt.

“At this time, the identity of the deceased has not been confirmed,” police said Tuesday evening in a news release.”A post-mortem examination will take place at a later date.”

Police said there are no further details at this time as the investigation is ongoing, but will provide further details as the they become available.

Police did not mention an ongoing missing person’s investigation regarding a 21-year-old man who was last seen in Cobalt on March 24. Police issued an appeal for the public’s assistance in that case on Friday.

Temiskaming OPP members, with the assistance of OPP Forensic Identification Unit (FIS), OPP Crime Unit, and the Emergency Response Team (ERT) are continuing the investigation into the found human remains under the direction of Detective S/Sgt Kurtis Fredericks of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB).

The Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service (OCC-FPS) are also engaged in this investigation.
