OPP says female found in Redbridge area is missing Timmins woman

The Ontario Provincial Police says allegations of an attempted abduction are not true.

The alleged incident is believed to have happened on Saturday night.

The Facebook post claims nine women were abducted in an attempt to bring them into the United States.

It also claimed that a group of East Indians were behind the attempt.

The post suggests the women were rescued when they yelled out at the border, leading to the arrests of those involved.

An OPP spokesperson says they and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection are aware of the post but tell Acadia News that the incident did not occur.

“The Rainy River District OPP Detachment recognizes that conversation is continuing across social media networking sites concerning this incident and have consulted with partner agencies to confirm that this incident did not occur and there is no concern for public safety at this time,” says an OPP release.

Police do issue a reminder about the public being aware of their surroundings at all times, and call police if you observe any suspicious activity or behaviour.

The allegation comes amidst a heightened awareness of human trafficking promoted by area agencies and the forming of a coalition involving representatives from both sides of the border to confront it.
