Luke Joly-Durocher, of Témiscaming, Québec, was 20 years old at the time of his disappearance. Luke had been visiting friends in North Bay, Ontario, and was last seen on Friday, March 4th, 2011 at 11:54 p.m., when he was refused entry into a licensed establishment at the corner of Main and Wyld Streets. His friends were captured on surveillance cameras entering the establishment without him. A short time later, surveillance footage at the bank captured cut-off images of a man believed to be Luke, entering the bank, followed by another, unidentified man. Luke was reported missing to the North Bay Police Service by his parents on March 7th, 2011.
At the time of his disappearance, Luke was described as being 5 feet, 8 inches tall and weighing about 150 pounds with a slim build. He had medium-length dark hair and braces on his upper teeth. He often had facial hair and was rarely seen clean-shaven. Luke was wearing a dark navy American Eagle jacket, dark blue jeans and and old New Balance black running shoes with green stitching. It is also believed that he was wearing a purple belt, and police are now focusing their attention on this item of clothing. At the time of the initial investigation, police retrieved Luke’s dark navy American Eagle jacket, his keys and his prescription eye glasses from a residence on Sherbrooke Street where he had been staying with friends. Luke’s cell phone was also retrieved from the same residence. Phone records show that Luke’s last communication was a text to his father at 8:51 p.m. on March 4th, 2011.
On March 15th, 2011, a pedestrian contacted police to report that Luke’s bank card was found on Sherbrooke Street. Luke’s bank account was last accessed on the day he went missing on March 4th, 2011, when he withdrew $20.
Luke’s father believes that his son owed money to somebody, and that they had arranged to meet that night on Main Street. He suspects that the pair went to the bank to take out the money which was owed, but when Luke realized he didn’t have his debit card, the pair went back to the residence where Luke was staying. This would explain why his jacket, keys, and cell phone were later found in the residence. Luke’s father suspects that his son had dropped his bank card somewhere along the way, unknowingly, and when the person who was owed the money realized that Luke didn’t have his card at the residence either, Luke was abducted and murdered. Luke’s father maintains that while his theory is just speculation, it’s what he believes happened to his son.
In the six years since Luke went missing, two women have come forward with stories corroborating Luke’s father’s theory that his son was murdered on March 4th, 2011. Both claims, however, have since been proven false, and the perpetrators were prosecuted for obstruction of justice and sentenced to jail time for misleading police with false allegations. One of the women who was prosecuted, receiving a 2 year prison sentence, stated that she witnessed Luke being beaten to death.
On the fifth anniversary of Luke’s disappearance the North Bay Police Service announced that they are offering a reward up to $50,000 to anyone who comes forward with information concerning the person or persons responsible for Luke’s disappearance.
Over the past six years, North Bay Police Service investigators have conducted hundreds of interviews, and followed up on as many leads and tips, trying to determine what happened to Luke, but to no avail.
