Sudbury Woman Charged After False Missing Person Report Consumes Police Resources
A 31-year-old woman from Greater Sudbury has been charged with obstructing police following a two-month investigation that began with what turned out to be a fabricated missing person report.
On August 28, 2025, the woman contacted Greater Sudbury Police requesting a well-being check on an individual she claimed had not been seen or heard from in some time.
Initial patrols found no trace of the person, and after two weeks of follow-up with no leads, the case was escalated to the missing persons unit on September 13 due to the length of the reported absence.
Throughout the investigation, officers repeatedly spoke with the woman, who consistently denied knowing the individual’s whereabouts.
Evidence later revealed she had been in contact with – and was actually living with – the supposedly missing man the entire time. He was located safe and in her company on October 30, 2025.
The woman was arrested and charged on November 4 with public mischief. She has been released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on December 17, 2025.
In a statement, Greater Sudbury Police emphasized the significant resources required for missing persons cases and reminded the public that deliberately misleading investigators is a serious criminal offence that diverts attention from genuine emergencies and erodes public trust.
