First responders in London, Ont., resumed searching the Thames River for a missing girl Friday morning at first light.
The search initially began with divers and boats at around 3 p.m. ET Thursday after reports that a young girl entered it, and was then seen struggling, near the intersection of Adelaide Street and Kipps Lane.
“Members of the London Police Service continue to monitor the river and searched riverbanks overnight for the missing child with the use of several large spotlights,” London Police Service Spokesperson Cst. Matt Dawson said in a statement Friday morning.
“Emergency services will be deploying back into the river this morning as day breaks. Police are reminding the public that the river is high and moving quickly and to allow emergency personnel with the appropriate safety gear to conduct the search,” Dawson said.
There are no details on the age of the child, but the emergency call, according to fire officials, came from the mother.
About a dozen church community members who were at the scene Thursday for support said the mother was there with her three children, and the family is from the Philippines. The church members also said the young girl, who is believed to be about seven years old, ventured off while the mom was busy with the younger children.
More to come.
