The search for a child who fell into the water in Cooks Cove, N.S., has extended into a second day.

Nova Scotia RCMP said emergency crews were dispatched Thursday around 1:40 p.m. Police said it was reported that a child fell into the water while fishing with a man and another child.

“The man entered the water immediately to rescue the child but was unsuccessful,” read a news release Friday.

Police told CTV News the search for the child continued overnight as much as possible given the darkness and is continuing Friday.

The search is being assisted by several ground search and rescue teams, multiple fire services, and the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, as well as Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Nova Scotia’s Department of Natural Resources and Renewables Air Services, and the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association.

The public is being asked to avoid the area as the search continues.

“RCMP victim services is engaged, and our thoughts are with the child’s loved ones at this difficult time,” read a news release.

Cooks Cove is located in Guysborough County, roughly 43 kilometres west of Canso, N.S.
