π¨ Ryan Shtuka’s Story Spreads Worldwide Through “Shtukasaurus” Toy Dinosaurs β Missing Since February 17 2018
More than eight years after 20-year-old Ryan Shtuka disappeared from Sun Peaks Mountain Resort in British Columbia on February 17, 2018, a unique awareness campaign using toy dinosaurs continues to share his story around the world.
Volunteers began distributing small plastic dinosaurs β nicknamed “Shtukasaurus” β in early 2022. Each toy carries a tag explaining Ryan’s disappearance and a QR code linking to a dedicated Facebook page.
Photos of the dinosaurs found in various locations have been shared for years, with one post from late August showing a toy discovered on a running path in Courtenay gaining widespread attention. The awareness page saw a surge in new members as a result.
Ryan’s mother, Heather Shtuka, expressed gratitude for the interest, noting it has helped carry Ryan’s story to countless new people. Volunteers quickly ran out of dinosaurs as orders came in from across Canada and internationally.
The toys are produced at cost, with all proceeds reinvested into making more. Pickup locations include several cities in British Columbia and Alberta, with shipping available worldwide.
Each tag encourages finders to share Ryan’s story and a photo of where the dinosaur was discovered. The campaign has now reached 30 countries, keeping attention on Ryan’s unsolved disappearance.
The initiative also highlights other missing persons cases and has drawn interest in the 2020 documentary “Peaks and Valleys: The Search for Ryan Shtuka.”
