Police have identified a 40-year-old woman from Winnipeg, June Christine Johnson, whose partial remains were discovered near the Red River last month. The Winnipeg Police Service has determined her death to be a homicide.
The remains were found in the South Point Douglas area, specifically around Curtis Street and Higgins Avenue, on April 15. Sgt. Wade McDonald, part of the Winnipeg Police Service’s homicide unit, revealed that Johnson had been dismembered but did not disclose the cause of death. Following a press conference on April 17, numerous tips from the public helped in identifying Johnson through forensic verification.
According to Sgt. McDonald, the police believe that Johnson’s death is an isolated incident and not connected to any ongoing investigations.
During the press conference, Sgt. McDonald shared a statement from Johnson’s family, emphasizing her struggle with addiction while also highlighting her sense of humor and outgoing nature. The family requested privacy during this difficult time.
In Wednesday’s news conference, Sgt. McDonald mentioned that Johnson was last seen in downtown Winnipeg in February 2023. She had interacted with various community organizations in the area, including Main Street Project, Siloam Mission, and Salvation Army.
The case has involved the dedicated efforts of over 60 members of the Winnipeg Police Service, who have collected and reviewed 11 terabytes of video footage. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with Johnson’s death.
Police are urging anyone with information about the case to come forward and contact them.
