The RCMP confirms a body has been found near where an 86-year-old woman with dementia went missing in Chilliwack last month.
Grace Baranyk was last seen by a caregiver at around 10:30 a.m. on Saturday July 13 at her home on Lenora Crescent. Thousands of people joined a Facebook dedicated to the search, set up to mobilize volunteers handing out flyers and collecting tips.
On Wednesday, a post in the group said she had been found dead, and condolences are now pouring in.
The RCMP says while it can confirm a woman’s body was found Tuesday near where Baranyk was last seen, it’s too early to make an official identification.
“The body of a woman was located on private property in the region where a missing person was last seen,” says RCMP Corporal Mark Rail.
Mounties say they have no reason to suspect foul play and have turned the case over to the BC Coroner’s Service.
“No evidence of criminality was uncovered at the scene,” Rail says. “The identity of the deceased person has not been 100 per cent confirmed.”
