π¨ TRAGIC UPDATE: REMAINS FOUND AND HOMICIDE CHARGES LAID MORE THAN A YEAR AFTER 11-YEAR-OLD KAI PAVLOVIC DISAPPEARED IN BURNABY, B.C.
More than a year after 11-year-old Kai Pavlovic was first reported missing in British Columbia’s Lower Mainland, authorities have announced the heartbreaking discovery of his remains, alongside homicide charges against two people.
The Burnaby child disappeared in September 2025, prompting public tip appeals from the RCMP, though investigators noted at the time that the circumstances did not meet the threshold for an Amber Alert. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) quietly took over the case in June and confirmed the tragic conclusion to the search.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share this update in the investigation into Kaiβs death,” said Sgt. Freda Fong in a statement. “There are no words to accurately express the sadness surrounding the circumstances.”
π¨ Arrests and Charges
- Branko Bijelic, 51: Arrested in Burnaby on Thursday and charged with second-degree murder and indignity to human remains.
- Sarah Bijelic, 46: Charged with manslaughter in connection with the case.
IHIT stated that additional information will not be released while the case remains before the courts. “We recognize the concern this investigation has caused within the community, and our thoughts are with Kaiβs loved ones and those affected by this tragedy,” Fong added. “We thank the public for their assistance and for coming forward with information.”
π¨ Remembering Kai
Burnaby RCMP previously launched an investigation after performing a well-being check, though custody details were kept private. Early in the search, extended family members in New Zealand released a statement describing Kai as a bright, curious, and outgoing boy who loved climbing trees, building forts, learning to sail, and caring for animals, particularly horses, cats, and dogs. “Kaiβs family in New Zealand loves him dearly,” the statement read.
