Winnipeg police have two women in custody after a deal to return a stolen car went awry on Tuesday night.
Police responded to a report of a 33-year-old woman being abducted in the 1100 block of Arlington Street on April 25 at 7:30 p.m. The two suspects had arranged to meet with the victim to return a stolen vehicle. However when the woman entered the car they fled with her in it and the police were called.
Cadets saw the car in downtown Winnipeg and told the communications centre, police, including the canine unit attempted to stop the vehicle but the suspects rammed both police cars. No officers were injured in the collision. The stolen vehicle fled to the North End where it was tracked by the police helicopter. The chopper provided eyes in the sky for officers on the ground who used a spike belt in the 1600 block of Burrows Avenue to stop the car. After a short foot chase, police arrested two suspects.
The 33-year-old woman remained in the car and was unharmed.
The Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation and learned the three women were known to each other and that the suspects had stolen the car from the victim on April 23. The suspects refused to return the vehicle unless the victim paid a pre-determined amount of money.
