Police have found the body of murder victim Chelsea Davidenas in a rural area southeast of Calgary.
In a release on Friday, Calgary police say the remains of the 29-year-old were located by officers on late Thursday afternoon, northeast of Carseland, Alta., near Range Road 254 and Highway 901.
“After narrowing down the search location, we engaged the Calgary Search & Rescue Association (CALSARA) to assist in the search efforts,” reads the police release. “Investigators worked with The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, who has now identified the remains as Chelsea.”
Earlier this week, police announced a homicide investigation and first-degree murder charges against two men.
Davidenas was first reported missing more than two months ago, and investigators believe she was killed hours after she disappeared on Feb. 17.
Prior to locating her remains, police said they had gathered enough evidence to believe she was lured to a home in northeast Calgary by men she was familiar with. It’s believed she was killed inside the home.
Davidenas was likely targeted because of her history as a sex worker, police say. They do not believe the case is linked to any other missing people in Calgary.
Police have charged two men, 52-year-old Calgary resident Paul Joseph Rushton and 26-year-old Airdrie resident Steven Aaron Zwick, with one count of first-degree murder each. Both men have criminal records.
The pair are said to be cooperating with police and appeared in a Calgary courtroom on Thursday.
