Hamilton police believe a trucker who vanished from the Burlington Skyway in mid-December may not have jumped from the bridge, but his family is trying to come to terms with the worst.
“This is very hard for the family. No one can understand how this happened,” said Dhanoa Singh, the brother-in-law and the Edmonton-based employer of Charanpreet Singh. “We were told he is dead. We had to fly to Toronto and spoke with the police officers. He left everything in the truck, all his belongings. And the passenger door (which faced the water) was open.”
Police say 25-year-old Charanpreet Singh disappeared on the bridge, where his truck was abandoned in the early-morning hours of Dec 14. No sign of Singh has been found since. Among the possibilities police were investigation was the notion that Singh jumped from the bridge after leaving his truck.
Police now say that Singh does not appear to have walked off either side of the bridge. However, they do say surveillance cameras in the area showed an object of some kind falling from the Skyway into the water, but they do not know what it was.
Const. Indy Bharaj said police do not know if that object was a person or something else entirely. The low visibility of the evening footage makes identifying the object very difficult, Bharaj said.
Police are now exploring the possibility that Singh left his truck and got into another vehicle which then left the area.
