A panicked stray dog found alone at the edge of the Niagara River led emergency services on a search for its owner Thursday afternoon.
Niagara Parks Police said officers were patrolling on Niagara Parkway near Portage Road in Niagara-on-the-Lake at about 1:40 p.m. when they found a large sheepdog with brown and white shaggy fur running alone along the escarpment in what appeared to be a panicked state.
Police said the dog was wearing a blue harness with no leash attached. The animal also would not approach the officers and became aggressive when officers approached it, making it impossible for them to determine if it had any identifying tags on its collar.
After the officers unsuccessfully searched the area for the dog’s owner, police called in Niagara-on-the-Lake firefighters and Niagara Helicopters to search the river and escarpment for the missing owner, due to the suspicious circumstances.
Police said SPCA was called in as well, and as of late Thursday were in the process of trying to catch the dog.
Anyone who may recognize this dog or have any information about this investigation is asked by Niagara Parks Police to call 905-356-1338 ext. 0.
