An Amber Alert issued for a missing four-year-old Saskatoon girl has been cancelled after she was found Wednesday morning.
Saskatoon police Supt. Randy Huisman described the result as a “tremendous relief.”
“I mean, we’ve seen cases in Saskatchewan and across the country where the outcome is our worst nightmare,” Huisman said.
Saskatoon police said the girl was last seen at 2 a.m. Tuesday at her home on Devonshire Crescent.
Police said they were not notified she was missing until around 9:30 p.m. the same day.
Huisman said investigators are still trying to determine why it took more than 19 hours for the missing person report to be filed.
The girl left her home with a woman who police said was not known to the girl’s family, though it’s believed the girl went willingly.
“We’re trying to answer a lot of questions ourselves in regards to how … this incident transpired,” Huisman said.
Another call to police provided a potential link in the case, Huisman said. Officers got a report of a woman being assaulted while she was with a child “who was not properly dressed.”
The clue led police to a 22nd Street business, which provided a surveillance image, a potential name and a potential location, Huisman said.
Roughly half an hour after the Amber Alert was issued, the woman from the image contacted police.
“She called us right away and said ‘I’ve got her. She’s safe and sound,’” Huisman said.
Police found the girl at a house in the 1900 block of 20th Street West.
Huisman said the woman was being interviewed by the major crimes section. Before major crimes investigators were involved, roughly 20 officers were involved in the search effort.
Investigators said there doesn’t appear to be criminal activity involved in the girl’s disappearance, but they continue to investigate.
“Our investigation will lead us to whether criminal charges are warranted or not,” Huisman said.
In addition to police, Huisman said stakeholders including social services officials are now involved in the investigation.
