Niagara Regional Police say officers have found human remains in the Welland Canal while searching for a missing teenager.

The remains are “unidentifiable,” according to police. Detectives will be working with the coroner’s office to identify them.

The remains were found on the same day that officials were searching the waterway for Quintin Bingley, an 18-year-old who has been missing since late May.

Members of the Niagara Regional Police Service’s Marine Underwater Search and Recovery Unit and Emergency Task Unit started scanning the shore from Lock 1 to Lock 2 Thursday morning.

Sandra Kroeker, the teen’s mother, told CBC News Thursday that if the search found something, she felt she might get some closure.

“But of course, we are all hoping they don’t find anything,” she added. “There’s always that possibility that he is out there and he has run away.”

Police have not said if the remains they discovered are those of the missing teenager.

On Friday Kroeker said the family won’t know anything until the remains undergo forensic examination, which could take weeks.

Officers will remain at the scene for the next several hours and could stay out overnight as the investigation is ongoing.
