A footprint helped searchers find a girl missing more than a day at an outdoor education centre in Sault Ste. Marie’s north end.
Ruby Kerr, 11, went missing during a game of hide-and-seek with her Grade 6 classmates at Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board’s St. Kateri Outdoor Learning Centre at about 11 a.m. Friday.
Sault Ste. Marie Police Service started its search shortly after that time. Ontario Provincial Police, Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and Sault Search and Rescue joined the probe in the 1500 block of Goulais Avenue.
“A footprint was found” that matched with Kerr’s shoe, said police spokesperson Lincoln Louttit.
“And then they found Ruby not too long after that,” he told reporters near a mobile police command unit.
An OPP helicopter spotted the Holy Cross elementary school student.
“We quickly got some people out to where Ruby was,” said Louttit. She was about nine kilometres north of the centre’s buildings. Kerr was returned by helicopter to her waiting family, some of whom came from Barrie, Newmarket and Toronto.
