Prosecutors are asking the Alberta Court of Appeal to increase the sentence for a Calgary father who abducted his daughter and hid her with family in Iraq, where she’s been since June 2018.
But the girl’s mother, who hasn’t seen her daughter in nearly four years, says her only focus is trying to reunite with Zahraa, now 14 years old.
“I want my daughter back and I fight to bring my daughter back and I am dying every day without her,” said Zainab Mahdi in a phone interview with CBC News.
“My life has no value without her.”
Last May, Ali Al Aazawi was convicted of abduction, contrary to a court order, but was acquitted of the more serious charge of kidnapping.
In December, Al Aazawi was handed a two-year sentence. With the time already spent behind bars, he had just 12 months left to serve.
