🚨 Edmonton Police Narrow Search for Presumed Dead Indigenous Teen – Samuel Bird, 15 – New Information Leads to Carrot Creek
The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has concentrated its ongoing search for Samuel Bird, a 15-year-old Indigenous boy who vanished in early June, on a rural area west of Edmonton. The renewed focus comes after new information prompted investigators to change their understanding of key evidence in the case.
Detective Jared Buhler of the EPS Homicide Section described the latest development as a significant turning point. “It’s like doing a puzzle. Sometimes, you don’t know the piece you’re looking for until other pieces fall into place around it, and that’s what unfolded this week,” Buhler said during a Thursday news conference near the junction of Carrot Creek and the Yellowhead Highway.
Bird, who would have turned 15 at the end of September, was last seen on June 1, 2025. While no arrests have been made, police believe the teen is deceased. At the start of October, investigators stated that those responsible for his disappearance likely disposed of his body within a 150-kilometre radius of Edmonton.
📍 Search Focused West of Edmonton
Based on recent analysis, police have redirected resources to the Carrot Creek area, a rural community along Highway 16 in Yellowhead County, approximately 160 kilometres west of the city. The region is largely forested with sections of agricultural land, providing the kind of terrain investigators say offenders often choose when attempting to conceal evidence.
“Yesterday, we were further down the road than we were today. Our information and analysis with recent information brought us here,” Buhler explained. “It was compelling enough to immediately send our canine unit to this location from the other location.”
Buhler added that the team’s “understanding of the evidence” has evolved rapidly. “Over the course of the last five days, several pieces have fallen into place which helped us understand the big picture a little better.”
📌 Controlled Search Approach
The EPS is coordinating search operations in collaboration with Yellowhead County RCMP, using only professional and specialized resources at this stage. Buhler emphasized the importance of maintaining a controlled and undisturbed search environment.
“We don’t want 100 people traipsing through the bush right now,” he said. “We want as pristine a search area as we can right now, and as we move through that and eliminate areas, then I’m all for a second set of eyes.”
Investigators are concentrating on areas that are accessible by vehicle yet offer natural concealment. Police are also reaching out to local landowners, urging them to check their properties for anything unusual.
“It’s important to remember this is still a huge area,” Buhler noted. “We’re looking for, still, a needle in a smaller haystack than we were before. So there’s no guarantees. But right now, this is the best we’ve got.”
📞 How to Help
Anyone with information about Samuel Bird or his whereabouts is asked to contact the Edmonton Police Service or their local RCMP detachment. The public is also urged to report any suspicious findings or disturbances near Carrot Creek or Highway 16.
