🚨 Fatal Wave Incident in California – Calgary Father Dead, 5-Year-Old Daughter Still Missing – November 14, 2025
A Calgary father died while attempting to save his five-year-old daughter after both were swept into the ocean by a powerful wave at Garrapata State Beach in California. The young girl remains missing.
According to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, 39-year-old Yuji Hu entered the water after his daughter was pulled from the shoreline by waves estimated at 15 to 20 feet high. As he reached for her, both were carried farther into the ocean.
The child’s mother also entered the water to help but was swept in as well. She was able to return to shore and was later treated for mild hypothermia. A two-year-old child at the scene was unharmed.
An off-duty California State Parks officer assisted in rescuing victims from the water and performed CPR. Hu was transported to hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. His daughter has not yet been found.
Large-scale search operations took place through November 16, involving California State Parks, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, CAL FIRE, the U.S. Coast Guard, Monterey County Search and Rescue, rescue divers, and helicopter support. Large coordinated searches have since been suspended, but shoreline monitoring continues.
