RCMP in northwestern Alberta believe they have recovered the body of a two-year-old boy who went missing near the Wapiti River on Friday.

Grande Prairie RCMP said a body believed to be that of the toddler was recovered near a construction berm on the Peace River. Officers were called to the berm on Thursday, which is located off 94 Street about 220 kilometres from where two-year-old Myles disappeared on Friday.

Police said late Thursday morning that the body was tentatively identified as the missing toddler.

RCMP said the Grande Prairie boy was playing in the water with his family near the Canfor Bridge in the Municipal District of Greenview on Friday evening when he wet missing.

Boats, all-terrain vehicles, police dogs and a helicopter were involved in the six-day search effort for the boy. On Sunday, about 40 to 50 people were involved in the search.

Police said Sunday the search area spanned about 20 kilometres of the Wapiti River, including areas of brush along the water.

The M.D. of Greenview is located about 480 kilometres northwest of Edmonton.
