The search is over for the body of a father who went through the ice with his young daughter in December in northeastern Ontario.
Christian Bergeron and his daughter Maya went through the ice at Pete’s Dam Park in Temiskaming Shores around 3 p.m. Dec. 29.
Maya’s remains were found on New Year’s Day.
Christian’s body was found April 15, Ontario Provincial Police said in a news update.
An online fundraiser for the family has raised more than $36,000.
The organizer said Christian died trying to save his daughter after she went through the ice.
“In an act of incredible love and courage, Christian attempted to rescue Maya from a dangerous situation at Pete’s Dam, a place that was close to their hearts,” Eric Lafond said.
“Tragically, both father and daughter were swept away by the current, leaving an indescribable loss for their family and everyone who knew them.”
Christian is described as a devoted father who put his loved ones first.
“Christian’s smile could light up any room, and his sense of humour, kindness, and generosity made him someone everyone could count on,” the GoFundMe page said.
“He was always there for his family, his friends, and his coworkers, willing to lend a hand at any moment.”
Maya is described as a sixth grader at ECCS who was known for “laughter, curiosity, and her incredibly close bond with her twin sister, Ava.”
“Maya’s lighthearted nature and joyful presence brought so much happiness to everyone she met,” the GoFundMe said.
