The North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP have confirmed that Clyde Johnny Sr., a Cowichan elder who had been missing since February 25, 2025, has sadly been located deceased.
Johnny Sr. was officially reported missing on March 5, prompting a large-scale search involving family members, RCMP, and Cowichan Search and Rescue teams. His body was discovered on May 28, over three months after he was last seen.
In a statement released on June 5, police said, “Although a full determination has yet to be made, the RCMP does not believe that criminality was involved in the man’s sudden death.” The BC Coroners Service is also investigating.

Johnny Sr. was described by his loved ones as a kind and devoted family man. His son, Clyde Johnny Jr., spoke to media during the initial search, recalling a silver cross necklace his father had beaded for him. “It has a wolf on it. On the back it has JR, and he has a similar one with SR,” he said.
His ex-wife, Rita Joe, traveled from Powell River to assist in the search efforts. “He’s a wonderful man. He was always there for our children,” she shared at the time.

Loved ones of missing man Clyde Johnny Sr. walked along the Cowichan River Tuesday afraid of what they may find, as they looked for any sign of the 68-year-old man, who vanished two weeks ago.
His son, Clyde Johnny Jr., told CHEK News he believes he is the last person to see the Cowichan Tribes elder, when they spoke near Duncan’s silver bridge on Feb. 26.
“He’s amazing. He actually beaded me this necklace,” said Clyde Johnny Jr. on Tuesday.
“It’s a silver cross, and it has a wolf on it. On the back it has JR, and he has a similar one and on the back it has SR.”
Johnny Sr.’s ex-wife, Rita Joe, travelled from Powell River to Duncan to join the search effort.
“It’s straight up emotional right now. He always thanked me for giving him three beautiful children and it’s heartbreaking to hear that he’s missing,” said Joe.
“He’s a wonderful man. He was always there for our children.”
