Disturbing new details have emerged regarding the reappearance of Rudy Farias, a 25-year-old Houston man first reported to police as missing in 2015 at the age of 17.
First reported by KPRC’s Mario Diaz, the new details emerged after a Wednesday meeting that saw Farias and his mother speak with Houston police investigators and local activist Quanell X at a hotel near George Bush Intercontinental Airport. According to Diaz, Quanell and an investigator spoke privately with Farias, who was discovered outside a Houston church on June 29 in a state of nonverbal confusion and poor health. The activist claimed that during Wednesday’s meeting, Farias was separated from his mother, at which point he opened up about being hidden for years by his mother and threatened with arrest.
“I heard horrific things from that young man and I did not want him to see me start shedding tears, but I couldn’t hold back the tears because of the things he was saying to us, the detective and myself,” Quanell said, per Diaz. “No child, no child should ever be treated like that by your own mother.”
The activist stated that the overall picture painted by Farias was one of a young man “hidden in plain sight,” having spent the last eight years of his life cut off from regular society. Quanell claimed the young man told investigators he would regularly be made to go with his mother to her job working security and do her duties for her.
“This young man said that when he initially ran away, he came back two days later and she told him that he had to hide, that he was going to get in trouble and they were going to arrest him for running away and that he had to continue hiding,” Quanell told media, per Diaz. “So she hid him out for a while then brought him back to the house and hid him in the home, initially, and whenever the investigators would come she would hide him in house.”
“When [his mother] was in the room, he wouldn’t say anything,” Quanell said, according to Diaz. The activist claimed that Farias told investigators he was allowed to visit with neighbors using an alias.
