📰 Remains Found in Florida Identified as Missing Canadian Woman After Nearly 40 Years
Skeletal remains discovered in Florida nearly four decades ago have now been identified as Jeanette Marcotte, a Canadian woman who disappeared in the early 1980s.
The remains were located in January 1985 in a wooded area near Malabar, Florida. At the time, investigators estimated the woman was between 20 and 50 years old and measured between five feet and five-foot-seven. No identification was recovered.
Despite extensive investigative efforts, her identity could not be determined, and the case eventually went cold. The unidentified woman became known as “Malabar Jane Doe,” with details entered into the U.S. National Missing and Unidentified Persons System.
Years later, investigators revisited the case and submitted forensic evidence for advanced DNA testing. Scientists were able to generate a comprehensive DNA profile suitable for forensic genetic genealogy.
That profile allowed authorities to conduct genealogical searches, producing new investigative leads. Follow-up work ultimately confirmed the woman’s identity as Jeanette Marcotte.
Marcotte was last seen in Saskatchewan in 1981 or 1982. Prior to her disappearance, she reportedly told family she was travelling to Vancouver, British Columbia. She was never seen again.
Officials involved in the investigation say this type of cross-border identification would have been nearly impossible without modern DNA technology.
After nearly 40 years, Jeanette Marcotte has finally been identified — bringing long-awaited answers to a case that once seemed unsolvable.
