Red Dress Day raises awareness about missing and murdered Indigenous women

We’re encouraged to wear red Wednesday in recognition of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people.

It’s the national day of awareness in Canada, also known as “Red Dress Day.”

Sarnia-Lambton Native Friendship Centre Executive Director Deborah Munroe said they’re hosting a virtual ceremony at 11 a.m.

“We have Wendy Hill, who is an author, and she’s sharing a story in regards to that,” said Munroe. “We have spiritual elders from the community who are doing a song on the event, and we have a few other guest speakers as well.”

If you can’t wear a red dress, you can hang them up on your balcony or front porch as a show of respect.

You can also post a picture of a red dress on social media, using the hashtags #MMIWG and #WeRemember

The initiative began in 2010 as “an aesthetic response” to artist Jaime Black’s Red Dress Project, which has been exhibited at more than 30 locations across Canada.

The event will be streamed live on the Friendship Centre Facebook page.
