Nanaimo RCMP have laid charges after a three-year investigation into the disappearance of 16-year-old Makayla Chang.

Steven Bacon is now charged with the First Degree Murder of Chang, who was first reported missing on March 22, 2017. Her body was recovered two months later in May 2017.

Bacon was named as a person of interest in August 2019 by Nanaimo RCMP officers, who requested assistance locating Bacon.

He was arrested a month later in Fredericton, NB on unrelated charges.

“Makayla’s family, and the community of Nanaimo and of Vancouver Island as a whole have been greatly affected by the loss of this young life,” said Constable Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

“Hopefully, this charge can assist with providing answers and bringing a degree of resolution to Makayla’s family, “

In a statement, the Nanaimo RCMP thanked everyone who assisted in the investigation, including private citizens, businesses and various investigative and police agencies throughout Canada.

They added that no further information or comments will be released as the matter is now before the court.
