Manitoba Begins Targeted Search at Brady Landfill for Remains of Ashlee Shingoose
On December 1, 2025, the Manitoba government officially launched a targeted search at Brady Landfill for the remains of Ashlee Shingoose (honorary name Mashkode Bizhiki’ikwe – Buffalo Woman), who has been missing since 2022.
Premier Wab Kinew announced the start of excavation, marking a new chapter in efforts to locate missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls.
“One year ago, we began the search at Prairie Green for Morgan Harris and Marcedes Myran, which was ultimately successful,” Kinew said. “Today, we have started the search for Ashlee Shingoose. More than anything, it shows that we are a province that keeps its word – when somebody goes missing, we go looking.”
The operation is a joint effort between the province, the City of Winnipeg, and the Winnipeg Police Service. A specific zone at the landfill was identified after months of technical assessments and preparation, including:
- Pilot testing of search methods
- Regulatory approvals and engineering reviews
- Health and safety planning
- Construction of an on-site search facility
- Removal of overlying material
A ceremony involving family members and community representatives was held at the landfill Monday morning to honour the beginning of the search.
Officials emphasized that the work will proceed methodically with strict safety protocols in place and will continue until the designated area has been fully examined.
The Manitoba government has remained in close contact with Ashlee Shingoose’s family throughout the planning process.
