Saint John police say human remains found at Long Wharf have been identified as a 20-year-old man missing since early May.
Chi “John” Thien Tran was last seen in the Parkwood Avenue area of the city’s north end on the evening of May 3.
A black backpack with his ID in it was found on Bayshore Beach on the west side two weeks later. Investigators said they had reason to believe the backpack may have washed ashore.
Several land and marine searches took place in the weeks that followed, but there was no sign of Tran.
On Sept. 13, human remains were recovered from the water at Long Wharf in the uptown area of the city.
In a news release on Wednesday, police said the remains have since been positively identified through DNA analysis.
“The Major Crime Unit, in cooperation with the Coroner’s office, continues to investigate the circumstances around Tran’s death,” police said in the release.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Saint John Police Force at 506-648-3333 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
