🚨 Cold Case – Missing Boy – Mallard, Manitoba – Marcus McKay, 8 – Last Seen July 15, 2000
Marcus McKay was just 8 years old when he disappeared while on a hunting trip with his stepfather and three others near Mallard, Manitoba, on July 15, 2000. He and his stepfather broke away from the group and successfully hunted a deer. Marcus was asked to remain with the deer’s body while his stepfather went to fetch the others. When they returned, Marcus was gone.
Marcus was last seen 10 kilometers north of Mallard, near Bison Road. A major search operation was launched in the dense and marshy terrain, but no trace of Marcus was ever found. At the time, he was wearing only jeans, a white t-shirt, and runners. Temperatures in the area dropped near freezing at night, raising fears for his survival. Police believe Marcus is deceased, but they continue to treat it as a missing persons case and have not ruled out foul play.
A $10,000 reward has been offered for information that could help solve this case. In 2021, the Manitoba Métis Federation announced a $1-million fund to help families of missing and murdered loved ones, with individual $10,000 rewards, including Marcus’ case. Billboards have been placed near Mallard to remind the public that Marcus has not been forgotten.
Marcus’ family continues to live with unanswered questions. His grandmother, Pearl Dumas, recalls the last time she saw him, when he gave her a big hug just a month before his disappearance. The family held yearly feasts to honour Marcus, keeping his memory alive. His grandmother has shared how painful it is to wonder what Marcus would have grown into as an adult. “Sometimes we cry. Sometimes we laugh. We always wonder what he would have been if he had grown up to be a man today,” she said.
