The bodies of two Quebec firefighters, who were swept away by flooding on Monday, have been discovered.
The first man’s body was located in the Rivière du Gouffre near Baie-Saint-Paul by a Quebec provincial police helicopter at around 10 a.m. on Wednesday. Recovery efforts took several hours before his body was airlifted out by helicopter at around 2 p.m. The victim’s family has been informed of his death.
The second man’s body was discovered at 1:30 p.m. around 500 metres from where the first body was found, along Rang St-Laurent, between Route 138 and Rang Ste-Croix. Both bodies are being sent to the coroner for formal identification.
The two missing firefighters were Christopher Lavoie, 23, and Régis Lavoie, in his 50s. They were helping people evacuate their homes when they were swept away by floodwaters in Saint-Urbain, Que. The flooding caused several homes to be evacuated and local roads to be washed out.
The search for the missing firefighters had been ongoing since Monday.
