The remains of Leah Keeper, a mother of two from Sagkeeng First Nation who had been missing from Winnipeg since the summer of 2023, have been found and identified, according to her family and First Nations leaders.
Background
Keeper was last seen in the area of Salter Avenue and Selkirk Street in Winnipeg’s North End on July 25, 2023, when she was 32 years old. She was formally reported missing on November 21, 2023. Her disappearance prompted an outpouring of community support, with friends, family, and community members distributing posters bearing her image and repeatedly organizing searches for any sign of the missing woman.
Remains Identified
Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs Grand Chief Kyra Wilson confirmed the identification of Keeper’s remains at a news conference on Wednesday, held alongside Keeper’s family.
Wilson acknowledged the weight of the news for all those who had followed the case and loved Keeper. She emphasized that Keeper was deeply cherished by her family and community.
Sagkeeng First Nation Chief E.J. Fontaine, who said he learned of the discovery on Tuesday, offered a tribute to Keeper and to all Indigenous women.
