Update: It has been confirmed the person was found by the search group organized by Diana Stencell, the sister of missing Nicole Smith, but there is no confirmation about the identity of the person found yet.
A person was found dead in Lions Club Park north Campbellford on Saturday, but it’s not known yet if the body is that of Nicole Smith, who was reported missing eight months ago.
Northumberland OPP report officers were called at about 6:30 p.m. to the area of County Road 50, where human remains were discovered by citizens inside a wooded area.
Police said the investigation is in the early stages, and the identity of the remains is still unknown.
The Coroner attended the scene and the human remains have been sent to the Center of Forensic Sciences, where a post mortem examination will be conducted.
The investigation continues by members of the Northumberland OPP Crime Unit, Central Region Forensic Identification Services and Emergency Response Team under the direction of OPP Criminal Investigation Branch Inspector Brad Robson.
Police further advise that there is no public safety concern at this time.
The investigation is ongoing and further information will be released when it becomes available.
An unconfirmed report said a group that had planned to proceed with a search for Smith on Saturday found the body.
Smith was reported missing after she was last seen in Campbellford in August, 2018.
The Campbellford woman was 25 years old at the time.
